How much time do you spend being active each day?
If you want to know the exact answer, then join the competition Youth in Motion - Sport unites Europe - ideally, with other children from school, local sports clubs, children's and youth associations, and from all over Europe.

It's all down to the right team!

Everybody can take part - kids in schools, sports clubs, kindergartens, day care centres and other children's and youth clubs or groups.
Pupils from a particular class or school who wish to take part are asked to look for partners, e.g. other schools, clubs or care centres from their neighbourhood or region,

or - even better - from the whole of Europe. By the way, if you want to find out more about activity games in other European countries, click here. Your aim is to build a team together. If you are taking part through your school, then the school coordinates the competition for the whole team and acts as the 'team leader', entering your team and collecting the results, as well as sending them in.

Get active!

Once the teams have found each other, they will organise a first activity week in May. Each team member will then, each day, write down their own 'time of activity', recording the extent of their physical exercise. For this, everybody can use a special form called My time of activity.

It is totally up to you which type of activity you choose. You can run, jump, ride a horse, ride a bike, swim, take part in a throwing sport, do gymnastics, play ball games, swing your arms, walk up stairs - whatever you like doing best. You will find examples for activities on the 'activity' form. All you have to do is fill in your type of activity and note down the time you have spent
doing it.

At the end of the week, everybody will figure out his or her total time of physical activity. The individual results of all the team members will then be added up, entered on the form Time of activity - results and sent to the contact address via the internet, fax or email.

The results of each team will be published on the internet. You can check at any time to see how your team is doing in the competition.

Activity begins in the mind!

Come up with ideas for sports games and activities for school breaks, lessons, leisure time, clubs or events - anything that gets you going!

Use your imagination - there are no limits! A few things, though - your ideas should include as many children as possible, should be easy to put into practice, and should also increase the time you spend being physically active.

You can enter your ideas for the Creativity Competition via internet, fax or email. They will then be published online.
In June and October, a team of experts will award prizes to the best ideas and projects.

Let's be more active!
Every day contains 24 hours. Of these, children and youths spend 9 hours lying down, 9 hours sitting (in school, in front of the television and the PC) and 5 hours standing. Only 1 hour per day is dedicated to physical exercise, and no more than 15 to 30 minutes to sports activities! This is nowhere near enough!

Examples of teams
A team can consist of:

  • School class + kindergarten + local sports club
  • School class from Hesse + school class from an English, French, Austrian... partner school + French sports club

All combinations are possible - the bigger the team, the better, because this increases your chances of winning a prize in the competition.
Of course, any class, school, kindergarten, sports club or day care centre can also participate on its own - and each one has a chance of winning. They may also find a team partner after entering the competition. If you are looking for a team partner, click here to contact other teams.

How the Activity Competition is assessed

  1. Number of team partners
The teams will be awarded one point for each local team partner and two points for each European team partner.
  2. Number of participants
The total number of team members will be assessed - the more, the better.
  3. Average time of activity
The total time of activity will be divided by the number of participants. The result will be the average time of activity per week per participant

Wanted: ideas for activities!
Think up some ideas for activities, outdoors and indoors, good weather and bad weather, small and large groups, school lessons and breaks, sport and leisure. So what do you do? Try out an idea, write it down, videotape it or take a photo, and send it off. For tips and suggestions, you can click here.
