The Past
The stick game
The Portuguese sport of 'Jogo Do Pau' has a long history.
For hundreds of years, farmers and shepherds were never
without their 'Pau', which was a long stick. They used
it as a hiking staff, for crossing rivers and herding
their animals and, if necessary, as a weapon for defending
themselves.
Especially in the north of Portugal, this tradition
developed into a combat sport, 'Jogo Do Pau', the 'stick
game', in which two contestants came face to face, each
armed with a staff.
For many years, 'Jogo Do Pau' was almost forgotten about.
Today it is played once again, and there are even national
championships.

Things to do
Salada mista (Mixed Salad)
How to play:
The children split into five similarly sized groups
and sit in a circle. One child stands in the middle.
Each group chooses the name of a salad, e.g. lettuce,
bean, radish or cucumber.
The child in the middle must try to find a place in
one of the salads by calling out the names of two types
of salad. They must now swap places.
The child in the middle tries to grab one of the places
in order to become a member of the salad.
The remaining child takes over as the person in the
middle, and the game starts again. If the child calls
out, "Mixed Salad", everybody must swap places.
Instead of using salads, the game can also be played
with different categories, such as animals, types of
cars, or names of towns.
Known elsewhere as:
In Germany the game is called 'Fruit Salad' - just as
in Italy, where it is known as Macedonia.
