The competition, "Youth in Motion - Sport unites Europe",
is striving to make our children and teenagers aware of how much
time they devote to physical activity each day. We want to encourage
them to spend more time being active - ideally, with other children
from school, local sports clubs, children's and youth associations
in Hesse, Germany and all over Europe. Let's motivate each other!
The competition consists of 3 parts: "Team Building",
"Activity Competition" and "Creativity Competition".
- Team Building: Everybody can take part. Schools,
sports clubs, kindergartens, day care centres and other children's
and youth clubs or groups. Pupils from a particular class or school
who wish to take part are asked to look for partners, e.g. other
schools, clubs or care centres in the neighbourhood or region,
in Hesse, Germany or - even better - in the whole of Europe. The
aim is to build a team together. The original school, etc. coordinates
the competition for the whole team, and acts as the "team
leader", entering
their team, collecting the results, and sending the results
in. (Kuhlmann)
- Activity Competition: Once the teams have found
each other, they will organise a first "activity week"
in May. Individual children and teenagers in the team will then,
each day, write down their own "time of activity", recording
the extent of their physical exercise. We have created a form
called "My time
of activity" for everyone to use.
The type of activity chosen is totally up to the participants.
They can run, jump, ride a horse, ride a bike, swim, throw, do
gymnastics, play ball games, swing their arms, walk up stairs,
etc. We have given examples for activities on the "activity"
form - and the children can enter their own types of activity
as well. At the end of the week, each participant will figure
out his or her total time of activity. The individual times of
all the team members will then be added up, entered on the form
under "Time of
activity - results" and sent to the contact
address via fax or email.
The results of each team will be published
on the internet.
The second Activity Competition in September will be organised
and assessed in exactly the same way.
- Creativity Competition: Children and teenagers
will come up with ideas for games, projects for breaks, lessons,
leisure time and clubs to increase their time of activity. Creativity
knows no boundaries - the young people's ideas are supposed to
be fun, they should include as many children as possible, and
they should be easy to put into practice.
All ideas for the Creativity Competition can be entered
via fax or email. They will be published on the internet.
In June and October, a team of experts will award prizes to the
best ideas and projects.

Average time of activity
Every day has 24 hours. Children spend 9 hours lying down,
9 hours sitting, and 5 hours standing each day. Only 1 hour
is dedicated to physical exercise, and no more than 15 to
30 minutes given to intense sports activities - nowhere near
enough.

Examples of teams
A team can consist of:
- School class + kindergarten + local sports
club
- School class from Hesse + school class
from an English, French, Austrian... partner school + English
sports club.
All combinations are possible - the bigger
the team, the better. This increases your chances of winning
a prize in the competition.
Of course, any class, school, kindergarten, sports club or
day care centre can also participate on its own - and each
one has a chance of winning. They might also find a team partner
after entering the competition. If you are looking for a team
partner, click here
to contact other teams.

The assessment
There are 3 categories for the assessment of the Activity
Competition and for the decision about the prizes:
- Number of team partners
The teams will be awarded one point for each local team
partner and two points for each European team partner.
- Number of individual
participants
The total number of team members will be assessed - the
more, the better.
- Average time of
activity
The total time of activity will be divided by the number
of participants. The result will be the average time of
activity per week per participant.

Activity begins in the mind
We are looking for: activity ideas for outdoors and indoors,
good and bad weather, small and large groups, school lessons
and breaks, sport and leisure. So what do you do? Try out an
idea, write it down, videotape it, or take a photo and send
it off. |
Party and prize award ceremony
At the end of the competition "Youth
in Motion - Sport unites Europe", the most successful
teams in the Creativity and Activity Competitions will be
invited to an award party in November.
