2004: European Year of Education through Sport
This initiative of the European Union (EU) aims to raise awareness amongst its citizens - and especially its young people - that participation in sport helps to develop a strong character and good social skills, and is a way of keeping fit and healthy. Youth in Motion - Sport unites Europe

As part of the activities of the "European Year of Education through Sport", the Ministry of Culture of the German state of Hesse, the Hessian Ministry of the Interior and Sports, the Hessian Ministry of Social Affairs, the "Sportjugend Hessen" as part of the "Landessportbund Hessen", the German Olympic Association (state of Hesse), the "Stiftung Sporthilfe Hessen", the "Deutsche Sportlehrerverband" (state of Hesse) and the "Landesarbeitskreis Kirche und Sport" - together with their partners in France, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, the Czech Republic and Hungary - are organising a competition for European children and teenagers.
